Welcome to the Health and Fitness Compendium

What is it – The Health and Fitness Compendium is an online information database being developed to contain a wealth of information and resources being developed as a compendium of knowledge aimed at assisting visitors achieve improved health, fitness and overall well-being.

Why – Statistics and regular;ar news reports indicate that the rate of obesity in populations is increasing. As an overweight middle aged IT and environmental health professional, I have also identified with the problem of a lack of fitness and have embarked on development of this website to collate informative articles that will assist me and motivate me to commence a new fitness program.

Better Health – One of the principal factors that I see as being a barrier to better health and wellness is the inability to commence and maintain a suitable fitness program. It is just too easy to come up with a multitude of excuses – “I am too busy“, “I will start tomorrow” etc without realising the importance of regular exercise to your health and well being.

It is essential to develop the right mental attitude to diet and an exercise regime that will increase your health and fitness levels as well as your life expectance while decreasing your risk of heart and coronary artery disease and obesity.

We hope to provide a range of informative articles that will arm you with the knowledge to change your mental attitude to diet and exercise and give you a better chance of success in starting on the road to better health.

One of the easiest ways of making a new exercise and diet program successful is to formulate a plan that fits diet into your existing schedule and stick rigidly to the plan for 7 days. The plan should be based on undertaking 30 minutes of exercise at the same time every day i.e. start a routine and make it a habit.

I have found that the task of exercise is fairly boring and therefore have needed to devise a way of making it more palatable. If you are busy and need to watch the news – set up a treadmill in front of your television and watch the news while you exercise every day. Not only is it news time – it is exercise time

Get an IPod and listing to MP3 newscasts, training sessions of your favourite music tracks to while away the time in a useful manner.

The secret here is that the time seems to go much quicker while your mind is occupied and you are concentrating on something other than the exercise and there is a time gain benefit as you have incorporated your exercise time with something else that you would be doing anyway.
