What is Anxiety?

Feeling Anxiety means you are not alone

During the course of their life everyone will experience anxiety in some form or another. Different levels of anxiety can be brought on by different things such as learning of an looming snowstorm or even the phone ringing in the night.

But when people talk about anxiety, they usually mean something much more severe than just a bit of nervous reaction to some unexpected event. Entire fields of study have been dedicated to the following types of anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and even panic attacks are considered full blown types of anxiety linked to medicine. Some people experience these indicators so severely that they are somewhat socially crippled, unable to hold down a job, meet new people, or function outside their home at all. The National Institute of Health states that – approximately 40 million American adults ages 18 and older, or about 18.1 percent of people in this age group in a given year, have an anxiety disorder

People may also suffer from more than one type of anxiety disorder, e.g. a person who suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder may also have post traumatic stress disorder as well.

OCD can also be linked to depression, and so on. Chances are that for every five or six people there, one of them has an anxiety disorder of one type or another. Every day there are new medicines and treatments being developed, so as previously stated there is help available to people who have these disorders.

Doctors and biologist can no longer ignore the fact that there are too many people in the world who have these disorders. So if you think that there’s something inherently wrong with you or that you’re somehow weak because you experience severe anxiety, it’s time to set that thinking aside and speak to your doctor about how he or she can help.
