The 2 Foods Most Likely to Make You Fat – One May Shock You
You may actually be shocked to learn about the two fattening foods in this article…most people wrongly believe that these 2 foods are “healthy”. In all of my years as a Certified Nutrition Specialist, this usually surprises people when I recommend they eliminate these foods from their diet.
Everybody these days knows how dangerous trans fats and high fructose corn syrup are, so I will spare you another lecture about those. Instead, read on to learn about a couple of foods that may shock you to learn that they may be packing on the fat.
The first type of food that is often wrongly believed to be healthy is wheat products…this includes nearly all breads, pasta, crackers, pretzels, cereals, bagels, muffins, and of course doughnuts. And I am also including “whole wheat” in the category of this fattening food.
First of all, the majority of the population has some sensitivity to the gluten that is in wheat as well as some other grains. Celiac disease sufferers are the most sensitive to it, but what most people don’t understand is that most of us were never meant to consume wheat as a large part of our diet. Our digestive system is not suited to processing large quantities of wheat in the diet.
The addition of wheat into the human diet has only been in the last two thousand years, and it has NEVER been in our diets in such large quantities until the last 80-100 years. This is a very short time-frame compared to the diet that our digestive systems developed over hundreds of thousands of years eating a hunter-gatherer diet of meats, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds.
From my experience with many of my clients, when they try eliminating wheat from their diet for a few weeks to see if they start to lose weight and feel better, it almost always makes a HUGE difference. Many times, they not only start to have have better results with fat loss, but they also get rid of headaches and digestion problems that they have suffered from for years. Sometimes when eliminating wheat from the diet even skin problems go away.
The 2nd example of the worst fattening foods that shocks many people because it is thought to be “healthy” is — fruit juice.
I’m not an anti-carb advocate per se, so don’t get me wrong…I do think most fruits are some of the healthiest foods available. However, we should NEVER separate the juice and only drink the high calorie sugary mixture leaving behind the fiber and other beneficial components of the fruit.
When you only drink the fruit juice (apple juice and orange juice being 2 of the worst culprits), you won’t get the stomach filling effect of the fruit fiber, and you will end up craving more carbs. Also when eating whole fruit the fiber helps to slow the blood sugar response.
Bottom line…drinking too much fruit juice will make you fat. On the other hand, eating whole fruits including all of the fiber helps you maintain a healthy balanced diet and high nutrient density (as long as the rest of your diet is whole unprocessed foods as well).
